Changing gearbox on mk3, need help understanding ratios
« on: 03 September 2012, 05:04 »
Hi,
Ive got a mk3 cabriolet 2.0 AGG engine. Im changing the DFQ gearbox which is knackered and have a 2Y box from a mk2 16v. I was told this will go straight on with the same clutch.
The ratios on this box are different so wondered what effect this will have on the car, im wondering if this 2Y is a good idea now!
ratios on the current box are:

3.46     1.94     1.29     0.97     0.81

ratios on the 2Y box are:

3.45     2.12     1.44    1.13   0.91

can anyone help and let me know if this is going to work or screw my engine up? thanks

it'll work.  really need the final drive ratio to get an idea what it's going to drive like.

if you've driven a mk2 8 valve gti   the 2y 16v box drives prittty much the same 1st through 4th,  but will be revving more i 5th for a given speed
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

final drive both are 3.67 so does that mean it will work fine? i just dont want it to be too mismatched that it will over rev my engine if im doing motorway driving.

won't be the best on motorway,  it work fine  as the mk2 engine can cope with the revs no problem.

box seems to be a be a lower ratio all the way through so the car will accselorate better but be revving more so probaly dent economy,  may or may not go faster
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
