mk2 1991 1.3 to 1.8 engine conversion
« on: 26 August 2012, 19:38 »
Hi,

This is my first post in here, and I'm looking forward to some expert advice! I've just purchased a lovely little 1.3 mk2 golf (H reg), and I'm desperate to do something fun with the engine. I'm tempted by the idea of fitting a 1.8 engine into her, but I'm unsure what else would need to be changed (brakes, clutch, fuel lines etc), and also where to get them from. I'd love some tips, advice (and ideally a complete list of everything I need to buy before I start doing this!)

Help a greenhorn out!

  :undecided:

Go buy a junker Golf3 GTI 16V and fit the subframe etc and the rear beam off that to your 1.3.

And don't forget to update the log book.

You'll probably find a G3 16V easier than a 1.8

I'm recommending the above because if you're upping the power you're going to need to update most of the mechanicals as well to ensure the car is safe.

Oh and go search.  There's a heap of information on here to help out a greenhorn.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

doing a mk3 16v conversion at the mo, get a full car if you can cause youll need loads of bits off it, thats what ive done and all i was short of was a rado pedal box, its a cheap way to get 150bhp out a mk2!

Thanks for the responses, and thanks for the offer richking, I can't believe how helpful everyone on here has been! I'm gonna go with diamond's plan. It seems the most manageable option, as antogoof has already found out! Sam...you are a mentalist! My brother likes your idea the most (he's the brave one in the family!).

Antogoof- how has the conversion gone? Any challenges fitting the engine, sub frame etc?

Thanks again everyone
