Recommend an Android Facebook app!
« on: 08 September 2012, 22:45 »
As per title really.

Official app is very bloated, I had to clear cache frequently as it would fill my phones memory and can't be moved to SD. Also it's slow to load, gives random connection errors and randomly refreshes the news feed meaning you have to start scrolling down the feed all over again. It seems to offer all the features though (except 'share'?)

I've tried Fast for Facebook, a very basic app but most features are redundant or don't work.

I've also tried Friendcaster but I can't log in, so it's useless. Feedback on Google Play seems to suggest this is common but not fixed yet.

Flipboard offers some basic functionality but is only designed to browse wall posts.

Can anyone suggest a fully featured app which works? Or do I have to continue to use the browser-based Facebook?

Flipboard can comment, it just takes an extra couple taps to get there - it's just how the app works unfortunately.

I think most apps for Facebook are going to be sh!t.

Root & flash CM to your phone and use Data 2 SD which maps /data to your SDcard, get a 32Gb SD card from Amazon for £12 and you're done :afro: *

*the steps may have been somewhat simplified.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Noob when it comes to rooting. Never done it before. Is it easy? Can I brick my phone? Samsung galaxy ace with 2.3 gingerbread.

The only thing you need to do is make sure there is a stock rom for you to flash if you need to return it for repair, I found Sammobile.com to have just about everything you could want for a Samsung Phone

Oh and I'm not sure if anyone has done a port of Data2SD for the Ace, though I imagine it has been. Best to check the Ace's XDA-Developers forum section for that bit. I would but my internet is shockingly slow, almost dialup speeds!

Rooting lets you do things on your phone that you otherwise wouldn't be allowed due to lack of support or permissions - running specialist apps mostly or modifying aspects of the Android OS that you normally don't need to.

1) There is a possibility, if something goes wrong, but very unlikely and you'd have to be very unlucky - providing you follow the instructions properly.

2) Define faster  Smoother / less of the "Android" jerkiness? Yes, if you flash a Jelly Bean rom it will be "buttery smooth". If you have an S3 there are people working on overclocking them, they've managed it on the US version based on the Qualcomm S4 chipset (S4 chipset is not to be confused with the next Galaxy S phone)

3) Depends on the phone, Samsung's are really easy to root & flash new roms - HTC's are trickier, though they have now provided tools to allow you to do just this - although it does leave a marker on the phone to say what you've done, but you may be able to flash over that, depending on the community support the phone has.

4) You WILL loose all apps & app data, so be sure to back it up using as many programs as you can, root first so you can backup app data too. NANDroid backups should let you restore to the state it was in when you took the NANDroid backup. You'll also loose any features the OEM baked into Android (SmartStay for one) unless the ROM is based on the original OEM rom...

5) Please read forums about rooting your phone and follow any advice given by those with the instructions. xda developers is great, but there are many other sites out there with information on rooting / flashing various devices, including YouTube & CNET.
