Hello :) Track/rally help?
« on: 21 July 2012, 22:43 »
Hi, I'm Kelly

I've always wanted to have a car solely for track use so my other half has just bought me a standard Mk3 2l golf gti. It will not be used on the road so I can pretty much go as extreme as money will allow...... My first jobs on it will be a complete internal strip (except front seats & dash initially), suspension, tyres & brakes and then on to more extreme stuff like cage etc

Do you have any recommendations? Advice? I'm in somerset, any track recommendations? Does any one have any spare performance parts they fancy selling?

It's the first golf I've owned and am really looking forward to seeing what I can make her do

Thanks for reading

hello and welcome

strip it, coilovers, some decent rubber perhaps, a service? you didnt say whether it was an 8v or 16v, but if its an 8v maybe your better of having a different engine instead of chucking thousands at it to make it a bit more powerfull when you can get a 1.8 20v turbo engine as standard already having more power than a heavily modified 8v

Thanks guys :)

It's an 8v ...... This is kind of my 'practice' car. I'm not concerned with the actual final bhp but what I can to what I've started with (does that make sense? lol). This is a bit of a first time for lots of things.... first golf, first time rallying, first time fully modifying a car.... I have a lowered and cosmetically modified focus as my day-to-day car but that doesn't really count because I haven't done most of the work.

I will get a thread going as soon as I start work :)

8v GTi's get a bit of stick, but I think once you've taken some weight off you'll fall in love.
Suspension is a must, a stripped car on standard suspension is a deathwish.
If you were thinking about more power, as Mr.Smiles said, the 16v engines are punchy.
You can pick one up for peanuts nowadays and the swap wouldn't be hard compared to a 20vT.
The route I've taken is to buy and engine and work on it while its outside the car, It's easier, cleaner and you'll learn lots.
Then... when its a force to be reckoned with, or when you are getting bored of 8v. Bang it in!
Best of luck. I'm sure this forum will help you loads.
