PCV valve

Evening all  :smiley:

i've been having real problems with the idling on my car lately, with the ecu chucking up all sorts of missfire/lean fuel codes mix etc. also when driving hard and approaching 5500 rpm, i would lose power and the EM light would flash for about 20 seconds and then return to normal. So i looked up what this could be and it came down to the PCV valve and the "pancake" PRV at the back of the engine. i have since removed the PCV valve from the engine but have no clue how to diagnose a fault with it. can anyone tell me what i should look for on the PCV valve to determine whether it is shagged??

i think you can only blow through one end of the pcv valve, and only suck from the other end, but from what you are describing, it sounds like your coilpacks are on the way out, as that is the symptons I had when mine were going kaput!
Mods: R-Tech custom remap, Beachbuggy K250 Turbo, Forge 007 DV, RAMAIR Jetstream 108 induction filter, silicone piping throughout, R-Tech Supersize TIP, 42 Draft Stealth Catch Can, N249 bypass, Ported Manifold, Toyo Sports FMIC with 2 & 1/2 pipes, Custom made full turbo back exhaust & 2 & 1/2 " downpipe and 200 cell sports cat. BAM injectors, Turbosmart Boost Gauge, BBS CK Wheels, 312mm Brembo front discs and pads, Carbon canister delete and last of all, a liquid cube!

well i managed to wrangle a recall on the coilpacks a few weeks ago so they are all brand new  :smiley:

i plan do do the whole PCV modification at somepoint but just need to srot out these running problems first.

doesn't seem to be airtight in either direction now but before i took it off the car, one of the pipes was compressed, is this normal??

I got my coilpacks replaced today  :smiley:

compressed, not from what  remember! When i replaced mine I got a new suction jet pump part and I got a lower silicone breather, as well as a top y shaped silicone breather from Creation Motor sports off Ebay, but in the end I ended up fitting a catch can, as it is much better as I kept finding splits in the pcv system

well a new PCV valve is cheap enough so i may as well renew it and see if it helps

how difficult was the catch can mod to do?? i want to do this one when i have some cash as i've heard it makes a world of difference to the running of the car  :wink:

Yes, then if it helps then all is good  :smiley:

The catch can is easy to do, there is a guide on here. I am not that good with cars, in fact all I know about their engines is from what I have learnt from having a 1.8t golf  :wink: So if I can do it I am sure you can  :smiley:

They're all one use clips on everything down there (unless someone has done some work on it before). Just use a jubilee clip.

This happened to me too, the bit you have circled snapped off and got stuck in the T piece hose. I could not fix this with a jubilee clip, you will need to get a new L shaped part, or you will get oil going everywhere and a boost leak. I got mine from VW, but I can't remember how much it was. You can get a modified stronger version from the U.S. I can't remember where from though at the moment.

£28 from VW, did mine recently and it has cracked
ARZ K03s, Oettinger Side Skirts, R32 front, Carbon stage 2, Forge 007p (yellow spring), Forge Actuator (yellow spring), Pipercross panel filter with DSG parts, N249 and N112 deleted, SAI deleted, Carbon canister deleted, Rear wiper deleted, Long Life turbo back custom exhaust with 200 cell sports cat, VR6/G60 clutch kit, Creation Motorsport TIP, Catch can, 'Wellycooler', K04 charge pipe, S3 ported inlet manifold - looks pretty standard on the outside though :)
