Where the hell is this supposed to be plugged in?!?

Comes from the block,just behind the dipstick....

looks like plug for the knock sensor, where does the other end of the cable go?
knock sensor on your engine sits left a bit left and up of the breather pipe (the one with the red tape around it - cure for which is get a new 19.6x3.6 O-ring from VW for 50p).

the corresponding connector in wiring harness lives just right of your distributor.

The whole sensor should look like in my ebay auction (colour of plug is different but actual sensor head is identical)

It does exit the block to the left of the breather,however there are no unused connections/plugs beside the distributor :-/

It slots into the metal clip thats part of the round socket for the engine loom, then another brown connector plugs into which comes from the wiring that goes to the positive battery termainal via the starter motor.
