Mk3 8v gti gear box change!
« on: 15 May 2012, 12:37 »
Hello haven't been on here for a while as been away working for 6 months, came back an my brother who's been looking after my beloved mk3 has a ruined gear box, heart broken!!

So i toyed with the idea of scrapping it, but i dont think that i can bring my self to do so..............is it a bad i dear for a novice mechanic to attempt to change a gear box? will i need an engine hoist or any other stupidly expensive tools to complete the fit?

Any help will be much appreciated thanks

I used a hoist on my mk4 but if you have a long armed jack you may be ok. check out hire shops as some lend hoists

It is quite tricky on a mk3 unless you have a big ramp. Its just the awkwardness of locating the box itself. I suspended the engine with a beam of wood and some rope(not ideal)

A days work if you take your time,

It can be tricky to seperate but once done all should be ok, also I would remove the front end for access.

I use my girlfriend, and rest it on my chest while i lay under it to get my golf gearboxes in,  or trolley jack an an inspection pit board,   ffs you dont need to hire a hoist, use ur arms!!!

This!!! /\/\/\/\/\/\ All day long!!!

done plenty of land rover gearboxes using this method too....... an trust me they are a C**T!!!
gearbox out, clutch in & refittal usually takes me 2.5hours on axle stands..... hour tops on a ramp.....
