PD 150 smoking
« on: 17 May 2012, 20:53 »
Hi all, long time reader first time poster here. Car is smoking (black) badly under hard acceleration and engine can be 'jittery'. Have checked the lower boost pipe (bottom left as facing car) and it is loose and has a build up of black soot around it. From searching other similar posts I'm guessing it's the clips and or pipework at fault. If this is the case, can anyone tell me what I need to replace and where the best place to order the part from is?
Also I have been getting an 'emissions workshop' warning, is this likely to be related?
Many thanks in advance for any help!

If the clip is broken then you will need a metal circlip from VW, less than a squid each. I always keep at least a few spare in my box as they are prone to breaking! It will have a small bit of play, longitudinally you will be able to push it in and out a few mm but it if the clip is broken the pipe will sit awkwardly and definitely cause juddering if the gases aren't getting to where they should be!

Workshop question has me...

Why has it taken you this long to make a post?

Ha! I have used the site to research when buying but hadn't had any issues until now! Well I took the bumper off to have a proper look, the clip is intact and like you say the play/looseness is in that direction. I certainly couldn't just pull the pipes apart without removing the clip. There was a small amount of oil and water in the pipe when I pulled them apart and a lot of soot and grease around the join on the outside if that has any importance?

There is always some oily residue in the IC pipework, wouldn't worry too much about that. Checked all of the connections, those circlips are f**king awful!

Red pipe coming from the turbo, the pancake pipe on the right hand side I think behind the wheel :lipsrsealed:If it is left I'm sorry  Pipe coming from the pancake pipe to IC, both ends of the IC & bend on top of engine bay going into the EGR. That is all of the IC pipework, and there are several of those clips which would easy break in that chain. Also the pancake pipes like break where the flange for the circlip is, sometimes leaking gas. Have a check and report back
