Thinking of buying a MK3 Golf GTI or VR6

Hi guys, just joined up as i am on the hunt for a car for me to muck around with and if i like it ill restore it to its former glory. I was at the scrappy a few days ago and noticed they had a GTI in which looked a really good example so would be an ideal donor car.

Anyhow, what are the common problems with the Golf ? I would aim to get either a GTI or VR6. I have a max of £350 to spend on the car (i appreciate it wont be the best example for that money but you never know your luck).

£350 will get you a tired 8v or maybe a VR on its last legs, have a look in the mk3 maintenance section for buying guides or use 'search' for specific details.

Well i bought my 16v off ebay for £300 and its defo not tired

Any mk3 for £350 is not going to be the greatest, you would be better to spend £500 to £700

he did say he was after a car to muck around with and restore though so if that is the case a £300 poopa would do just fine.

i just paid £450 for mine and all it needs is abit of welding on the rear arches and the rest is clean as a whistle with full service history MOT decent stereo 10 disc multi changer and clifford alarm with certificate so bargains are to be had especially in todays mk3 market.

I got the 16v cos there wasnt enough power in the vr to justify the extra 0.8 litre.
i shouldve heard a vr first........then drove it.......because i wish i bought a vr now
