Need help!
« on: 09 June 2005, 00:35 »
Hi guys.

I need some advice regarding my 1996 2.0 8v GTI.

Its got 93500+ on the clock, and I have proof of it been serviced last at 72000 (I've only had it a month or so)...I really want to get her running sweet and give her a good service.

What parts will I need? (My uncles mate will do all the work, but he's on holiday so can't ask)

She has a water leak from the hoses (ordered replacements) and from the right hand side of the engine block - would that be the thermostat?

I've already thought of Oil Filter, Spark Plugs, Distributor Cap, Rotor Arm, Air Filter, Oil (£51.74 delivered from gti-bits.co.uk).
Timing Belt, Belt Tensioner, Fan Belt, Power Steering Belt, Fuel Filter, Pollen Filter, Power Steering Fliud (£50.23 delivered from eurocarparts.com).

Can you think of anything else?  She has a few runs from York to Stanstead to do in around 4 weeks time and I don't want her coughing and spluttering her way down there.

Oh..........yeah another thing - noticed tonight that she has an oil leak, seem to be coming from the gearbox area. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just one more thing (promise), she makes a 'pinking' noise when I accelerate, any ideas on this? She performs well, and I average 35mpg over a tank of juice, just makes this annoying noise.

(My car sounds like a dog doesn't it?!) :)

Best thing you can do for the oil leak is clean all the excess oil off the engine warm the old girl up and then have another look will be easier to find then.your thermostat is located in the base of the coolant pump on the front right hand engine end.good to see someone else from York stalking the forum..

Do you know a good garage in York for doing work on VW's?

I go on holiday in 4 weeks and am taking the car to Stanstead Airport, but need ALL this sorting before I go.

Cheap but top notch work, thats what i need.....

Pinking - this could be the good old Relays. Either Fuel or ECU. Common problem.

Cheers for the info, there's some on eGay - I'll keep an eye on them....

Got more bad news on the Golf front too, the clutch is getting worse - could be related to the oil leak (bottom of the box has oil on it).....and gotta get her repaired at a garage. my uncles mate is out of action for a bit, so gonna have to pay proper money....sh!t f**ke bo11ocks....
