« on: 06 June 2005, 02:09 »
does anyone know the best kit for lowereing a 5dr 88/89 8v with 16/195/45 oz alloys.i was thinking of only going down 40mm cos i dont want to beach her, is this good? an how much should i pay? shes also starting to tramline a little, how can i cure this, must be to do with the wheels i reckon. should i fit spacers to secure the wheels cos i feel a little wheel woble coming on at 70-80mph (autobahn!)?jb.

Hi matey welcome to the site.  In answer to your questions then it depends how much you want to spend, you can lower the car on a budget spring set to go down 40mm and that will probably cost you about £60 then fitting on top, or you could go for coilovers or an adjustable set will will cost you anything from £350 - £700 then fitting on top, or for the sum of about £175 you can have a set of Bilstein shocks and Ventura springs called a Streetline kit from Euro Car Parts for about £175 then fitting on top, this will drop about 40mm. If you order from ECP in Leeds (see deals and discounts section) and speak to Stuart you will get 10% off for using this site. £175 above includes the 10% off already. As for the wobbly wheels, you probably need to check the wheels are balanced first.

sounds good, what are the advantages and disadvantages to coil overs and adjustable, or just springs on their own. i heard some people like to remove fluid from their existing shocks surely this is silly talk, cant see that being healthy. i hope the wheels are balanced, sometimes the sticky weights dont stick enough so i will check that out too. cheers for the info. jb.

i was on a budget so i went for the bilstein, its a great ride but i wish i had gone for coil overs to get a propper slammed look but if your only after 40 i would go for the bilstein, if you go for just springs you will get a bit on bounce when going over ruff roads and heavy breaking where the shocks cant cope with the loss of travel

Word of advice, if you do lower be sure to get the tracking and camber checked otherwise you'll be forking out for some new tyres in a couple of months.  Adjustable and coilovers will allow you to move the ride height, the others will not and you will be stuck with a 40mm drop and no option to go any lower. What toofunky said, if you are going to do it it's probably best to change both springs and shocks rather than just springs but that depends on the coin you have to spend.  :undecided:

Eibach pro-kit springs are the nuts, will drop 30-40mm and the standard shocks will just about keep up if they are in good condition. Had these on my Mk2 for a few months now, amd are excellent.
