bbs split rims
« on: 22 September 2003, 08:08 »
i'm looking to buy a set of 15"  bbs rs 3 piece split rims (the ones with the 2" dish rims) and need abit of advice.

can anyone explain to me what offset means and also what is the required offset for a set of these wheels for a mk 1? does it vary between mk1 and mk 2? What does ET (no jokes!!) stand for and mean? what is the best width tyre to put on. (i don't want to have to do too much arch trimming). what sort of price would a set of new or second hand ones go for?

if anyone has the time to answer any of these questions, it would be much appreciated.

cheers. :)

ET refers to the offset, I think it means something in German. This site gives a good explanation:

http://www.tyresave.co.uk/choose.html#FITMENT

Normal RS and RM split rims are 6.5" wide. Anymore than that were ordered wider or modified afterwards with wider rims.

I think standard VW offset is 32 or 37

195/50 would be the standard and cheapest tyre option. However 195/45 visually look a lot better without making a difference to the rolling radius.

A set of RM's are probably ?350 - 600
A set of RS ?500 - 1000 the latter for superwide polished ones

You can't get new ones of either model as they have not been in production for years!

Hope that helps :)
