Mk2 GTi 16v - Head Work

I'm will soon be taking my 16v'er to get the valve seals/stems looked at as it burning far to much oil.  Is there anything I should get done/ cheched while the mechanic is doing the work?  The car at the moment is completely original and want to keep it pretty close to that, although I would like to get a bit more performance out of it.

Alright mate, how often do you have to top up the oil. my '91 16v needs topping up approx every 3 to 4 months. Is a big job getting this checked out?
