Boots & Bonnet

Hi everyone, yesterday I became the proud new owner of a 56 plate, Golf GT Sport TDi, DSG 170.It as covered 42600 miles. I purchased it privately and i'm the 3rd owner. It has full VWSH. The previous owner once he knew was selling it decided to fit new tyres but only fitted budget cheap tyres! (fronts different to the rears!) It has 17 inch VW alloys and 225x45x17 tyres. I want to fit better tyres as I can't understand why you would put cheap tyres on such a car?
I'd say i'm an enthusiastic driver, I have purchased the Golf as my new job means I have to drive about a 1000 miles a month on dual carriageways and twisty 'A' roads. I'd like to keep good levels of grip and poise but do not want a really soft compound tyre as i'd like to maintain a reasonable level of tyre life.
I had a friend who had an 06 Golf 140 TDi and I think it had ContiSports?
Has a newer tyre come out that you guys have found to work well with the 170 TDi? Or what about the other big name tyre manufacturers?

Also when I viewed the car I struggled to pop the hood. I asked the owner as I didn't want to force the handle. He just popped it and I didn't take any notice. Today I went to pop the hood and the handle was really stiff and then it went limp! And the bonnet has not opened. Is this something that has happened to anyone else? Do you think it's a trip to the dealer? Thanks Tel
