That I cant answer, it would depend whether or not its out and you wont be able to tell that without a CO meter. Might be best to nip over to a garage to test it or borrow a meter and test as per Rubjonnys guide in the maintence section.

One thing to keep in mind is that older cars do smell like they are running rich compared to cars with catalytic converters.  Doesn't take long to forgot how the exhaust used to smell.
I'd start by having a look at the plugs first.  Should get a good idea that way before you pursue it further.

Your right about old cars smelling my kids complain that my mk 2 smells. They've never smelt a car without a cat!!!

Just got hold of a Haynes manual and it says about an idle mixture screw, I'll have a proper read later

My Dad has a 2.8i V6 Capri and I'm scared to light a match near that especially when it starts up.  Like pouring fuel straight out the exhausts.
