mk3 bottom end vs mk2 16v conversion???
« on: 25 May 2005, 14:18 »
Hi all,

Been playing with the idea of an upgrade...Just spoke to the garage i use and they recommended using a mk3 2L bottom end over a mk2 16v. Has anyone done the mk3 conversion? I was told it was much easier to do than havin to upgrade everything with the mk2 engine. I was quoted 900 all in, including rebuilding the head, etc.

He said it only improves the bhp by 3, but the torque is vastly improved. Plus its probably cheaper and easier to do than a full engine change.

Any comments?

Cheers

Lewis.

The 2L bottom is a very good upgrade to the 1.8. However you will hit a few bumps. The MK3 2L block is taller by 16mm. That means you will need a different downpipe. You need a blockoff plate and a different dizzy depending which engine management you have.
BUT, there is a solution for that. Its called 3A block and it comes from the Audi 80. Its also called a bubble block and it has the same height as your 1.8 block. Try to find one of these.

The 16V is a very good motor but I prefer the low torque of the 2L 8V. You just put it into 3rd and cruise arround town. The 16 needs some revs to keep it going. Not that bad but you need to downshift more.

Gearbox, In both cases your standard box will not hold. Try to get a box from a MK3 TDI. They are stronger and have longer ratios. Good for the motorway too. They are all 020 rod shifted and fit like a glove.
