I don't think so as my mate was able to turn the engine over by hand 9 to 10 times with no resistance. If it was to hit a piston it would either lock or have lots of resistance. Also, we took the plugs out and turned it over and she turned sweet as a nut when doing this, no unusual noises....

Sounds like it might just be the tappets havent filled up with oil properly yet, it does take a while for them to build up enough oil pressure if the engine hasn't been run for a long time/been messed with/they're new.

Has it got a genuine oil filter on it, as they have a non-return valve which helps retain oil pressure to the tappets after the engine is switched off.

Today I swapped my head for one off the engine I bought off my mechanic and this head made the same noise..!

I rev'd the engine aswell as leaving it til the fan kicked in but the noise wont disappear.

She ticks over and rev's fine so the timing is correct. There is plenty of oil being pumped up round the cams aswell.

What do I do next..? Do I go for a short drive or stick in some engine flush and change to oil..?

I really don't know what is wrong and both my heads have made this horrible rattling..?

are u shure the rattle is from the head (i know its a silly question)

when the current valver lump i got in the cab was put in it took a while for the head to stop tapping the first time we fired her up (about 20-30 mins)

Yep it's definitly top end noise, you can hear it when turning it over on just the starter motor (taking the leads out).

I spoke to my other mechanic today who is a vw specialist, and he said to fire her up and keep the revs at 2,500 to 3,000 and the noise should eventually disappear.

He said that it can take upto 20 minutes for the noise to disappear so Sportline_velly, your last post sounds about right.

I'll give this a try a bit later this evening, once the rush hor traffic has died down so I can take her for a run round the block if nessercary.

Ok, this is really bizarre.

I went out this evening, turned her over and she started (and remained) as quite as a mouse.

I've now just done a flush and oil change, and hopefully she'll remain nice and quite.

Thanks for all the responses guys..!
