Need spacers to fit spare wheel.
« on: 22 February 2012, 09:28 »
As some of you no last wheel I painted my wheels. What I had to do was do one wheel at a time and use the spare on each wheel in turn.
My 18" by 8j RS8 wheels need 5mm spacers on the front to stop them touching the coilovers.
The funny thing is though when I put the spare wheel on the fronts I also had to use the 5mm spacers to stop that from touching the coilys. Why do you recon that is, is it coz the coilys are wound all the way down to the bottom you recon?

Off topic a bit, did you use a kit to refurb or just buy all the gear seperatly? as I have wheels winging their way here as we speak that I plan to do myself.

It will be because the front wheels 'tuck' when the car is low, my standard wheels touch the coilovers now the car is low.

I just bought all the gear mate and did it myself.
One thing that helped alot was a 80 grit flap wheel that got rid of all the kurb marks.
Have you painted wheels before?  The prep is the most important thing and on wheels it takes ages due to all the tight corners. The more detail on the wheels the more prep work you have to put in.

1-Get rid of all the deep scratches and kurb marks
2-gradually work from les grit to about 1000 grit sand paper all over so they are nice and smooth.
3-wash all the dust and dirt off
4-degrease it all and get into all the corners
5- mask up the tyre and valve if you are doing it with the tyres on.
6-lay a couple of coats of primer on.
7-sand the primer with 1000+ grit
8-wash and degreas again.
9-do a few coats of the colour you want.
10-leave to dry.
11-do about 4 coats of clear coat as its best to have a good thick layer in wheels.

Well that's what I did anyway lol.
