Picked up my Mk3 GTi 16v today
« on: 09 February 2012, 20:48 »
Hi all,

Picked up a 1996 Golf GTi 16v today. Lovely condition and good service history.

There are a couple of things that concern me though:

The MFA is erratic and was reading 22mpg on the way home (motorway) and when I stopped and re-started the car, it read 35mpg?

When going over sharp dips or grooves in the road, the car feels like it is trying to pitch itself to the left. Very scary.

Here's a couple of pictures.

welcome nice car

The steering left going over bumps could be tyre presures uneven tyre wear maybe even buckled wheel. It could also be top mounts warn bushes and definately worth checking your tracking and balancing.

The mfa are rarely accurate and its allways worth working it out the old fashioned way to be sure what its doing. Might be worth a reset by disconnecting the battery for 10 mins although this might start other problems. Also if your temp sensor is faulty it can give you bad mpg so worth looking at also. apart from that have alook around the mk3 section on here for advice.

Hello there,

i am really really new here...and i am trying to see how this works...

Have a couple of questions but don't know how to send them...if you can help, i appreciate.

I am wrting you cause i have a Golf 3 Gti 16v but 1993...very clean as well...and was reading your doubt about the reading of the Mileage per gallon.
I think is normal the way is reading...is not erratic...is that when we begin drive, i see mine is on 37.8 for example...and after i drive around 10 miles on highway on same speed it comes down...till the normal  around 9. It also  happens on my 8v , so i think you should not worry about that much.
Enjoy your ride. Great cars ...but mine have been giving me trouble for a week...when is -20 (I'm in Finland)it cranks and would not start...then after 20 minutes cranking...starts 3 cilindres and after a while ...like new again. stop for a couple of hours and here we going again cranking like crazy. Already burned 1 starter motor...fitted new one today...and it does not start. After warm...runs like nothing .

Please if you know something about it. HELP PLEASE
