Can't see anywhere it says it's ok for VW engines m8.If you wanna spend that much cash just to save carrying your laptop with you then go ahead.

Mk4 you'd need the 1.8T engine for any sort of excitement, as the 2l 8v is underpowered for such a heavy car. Don't know what Mk4 prices are, but I doubt £1500 will get you a well cared for and serviced 1.8T.

Where as £1000ish will get you a pretty mint Mk3 GTI 16v which has a great engine, is cheap to run, easy to work on and cheap to repair, so you'd have money to spare. £1500 will probably get you a VR6 highline in very good nick to be honest, but running cost will be a lot compared to the GTI.

Mk3s ain't selling atm so you could pick yourself up a bargain, I've bin watching loads on eBay (16v's only) and there's some half desent ones going for around £400/£700 so if you have a good look you could find a nice on for fairly cheap and you'll have a load of money left from your budget for doing any work/modding you want to do.

As for mileage vws are known for going forever (if well maintained) so as long as its got good SH then I wou.dnt worry about the mileage too much
