Oil cooler overkill or not?
« on: 06 February 2012, 15:53 »
I picked up a cheap mocal oil cooler cause it needed a bit of welding with the plan to sell it on but now wondering whether it would be a benfit to my setup or whether it would be overkill and keep the oil to cold?

The car is a AGU running a TD05 16G with all supporting mods, fmic and water meth injection. Should see 300-350 bhp power once mapped.

I wont be tracking the car its just for road use so would I need it or not, what do people reckon?

The way I see it: it's as overkill as the standard oil/water cooler is overkill with the standard power. So you have the right mentality, I was looking at the same setup but super 16g and I would definitely run an oil cooler.

Might be worth fitting and scrapping the standard cooler.

Im sure ill go bigger turbo along the line so I guess putting it on now should be ok then but im sure I read some where that unless your going to track the car the oil wont get hot enough to warrant using one and also it can stop the oil from getting up to optium operating temp?

Load of nonsense, it works in the same way as the coolant system with a temperature operated thermostat which only opens at a specific temperature. Even if you don't push it and your oil temperature does stay low it is still worth doing as a preventive measure.
