Try this if the mechanism inside the caliper is stiff:

Its for a mk4, but works fine on the mk3. The holes for the springs are even in place!!!

Nice one, I'm gonna be overhauling the rear brake system next month so these can go on the part list.

Yeah read that myself, I was thinking that maybe they'd be available from another VAG motor as I really like the idea of some spring assistance on the handbrake.
