Not a mk2, but a scirocco gt2 problem.....
« on: 01 February 2012, 19:00 »
Sorting a friend's 1991 Rocco GT2. It has only 91k on the clock. It has an 8v motor with the standard pooberg carb. Recently had a full service, including inline fuel filter, rotor arm, dizzy cap, etc.
Everything has been absolutely perfect for a month or two. But, last week, she was driving home and it started to splutter and hesitate, getting so bad, she was unable to drive it.
I drove it on Saturday. Started fine, idled fine, so I drove it home. All fine on the dual carriageway until the temp gauge reached halfway. Then, it felt like fuel starvation, jerking and hesitating. Below about 50mph, it was ok. Got me home fine.
Drove it back to work today, (in -1 temperature) and it was ok. Temp gauge reached just below halfway. Got me to work no problem.
I've checked the obvious, vac pipes, carb cleanliness, rotor, cap, leads & plugs. All ok.
Would it be worth changing any of the temp sensors in the front coolant flange?
Any ideas/advice much appreciated.

Could be the carb playing up they are noted for causing problems.

Thanks for that mate, but wouldn't that cause it to run like crap all the time?

nope his was a soon as it got warm, the fuel was evaporating (sort of) and stopping it running right. when i drove it it cut out on me and wouldnt start again, but was running fine all day. left it the night and started fine the next day, til it got warm. then we changed the pump on the front of the engine and was fine.
my mk2 use to do the same. but i changed the engine instead

Warm air feed from exhaust manifold shroud to the airbox present/intact?
Blend flap vac diaphragm getting vacuum at cold-start idle?
Flap actually moving in response to this, to let in pre-warmed air when required?

You may have guessed that I suspect carb-icing.
