Talk to me about i5 and i7?

I've noticed a few things about price difference in laptops and computers in general that some i5 are more expensive than i7.
Is it that i7 is not utliised fully because there is no software taking advantage of the four cores and i5's are better and more stable in todays software?
Refresh my tech please as I'm confused as can't be bothered to google it

Okay Jay I get it thanks, first Gen i7 and second Gen i5's right got it, intel paying that game 

I was looking at two laptops
N55sf and N75sf one was 17" or the 15.6 price wise I thought the i7 would have been more expensive but seen i5's more expensive!

If you can wait, then wait. the 3rd gen core i's will be out in 4~6 months, they're meant to be even better

mmmm those chips would be over £500 each top performers won't they?
Plus the laptop I was looking at has two usb3's, HDMI port, full 1080i, Blu ray combi,& 650HD  I think the core is a Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM
about £750?
Thats a good price I thought?
The sub 1.2K laptops seem to have faster GPU's and larger Hard drives.
These new 3rd Gen are they lower power hungry and more O'clockable?

This is always the case though, as soon as they're out there'll be updates again in a few months.
You can never keep up unless you're super duper rich lol!

I think Sandy Bridge have been out for about a year now, and it's not that much of a wait in real terms as he still has functional machines
