Want to buy an R32 - Advice greatly appreciated

Looking for some initial advice if at all possible. By all means, treat me as a novice, numpty, idiot of dreams and grandeur I may not be able to obtain. I’d rather have a full and frank reply as I may not have a clue on the bigger picture. Sarcasm greatly welcome as long as accompanied by advice and help.

Looking to get a 5 door R32
Current Car, Hyundia Coupe F2 Evolution (not as fancy as it sounds)
Reason for change – Missus not liking the above and Baby on way (plus MOT failed and cost for repair and keeping on road does not add up).

The Missus has always been reluctant to drive the F2, not due to power, but size. We have had 2 Golf’s in the past, MKI’s C, she is more than happy with the new size advantage and aware what engine the R32 has.

However, before we take the jump, I was keen to get some heads up from owners. We are defiantly going down the Golf route, but as the R32 is somewhat top end specialist, I am keen to make sure I know all the harder running factors where I can.

Firstly, our budget, top end, currently 6k
- Are we asking for trouble with such a low mark? There appear to be a decent amount of dealers offering R32’s around this bracket.
- We can take an option not to have a car for a few months and have quite a bit more, pending on our patience, up to double this to 12k. Any advice on what we perhaps should be looking at?

Mileage
- With the previous Golf’s, one had since new and over 100k in mileage on them both. But with this engine and newer engines, have any wear and tear issues arisen?

General Issues
- Any issues/questions I should look out for, ask, enquire, request?

Servicing
- What is the VW standard cost for a service of this model?
- Tax disk, what bracket do these come under?
- Real miles per gallon, what are you getting typically, can anyone give me commuter miles and local city driving casual usage?
- Parts cost, are these greatly inflated for the R32 – Are thing as easy to do on the new models (any) as they were on the old?

Anything else
- Have I missed anything. Don’t think, I wont post this, he is bound to know. I know NOTHING.

We are currently London based, secure of street parking. I am going to contact my insurance and find out what it will be, also knowing this will reduce when we move back towards Reading way at some point later this year.

Thanks in advance for any help, pointers or mass ridicule that says, get the Golf 1.4 and continue to dream and pretend one day an R32 will be yours.

Cheers…..Q

i got my r32 in the summer upgrading from a mk3 vr6, i paid £6300 for it. black mk4 03 plate fully loaded with 66k genuine miles on it. it had full vw history.

tax is around £245 for the year.

just got the car serviced and mot'd after xmas and it cost me around £240ish.

mileage wise i get around 300 from a tank that includes a mix of town/a-roads/motorway driving. probably on average get around low to mid 20's mpg, depending on how i drive it. motorway noramlly get mid to high 20 or low 30's, again depending on driving style.

R32s. need the timing chain changing at 60k i belive...?

the idea is that they use chains so that they NEVER need replacing. However.. if they begin to rattle they need changing, which is a horrible horrible job.

I think they recommend having them checked at 100k, replacing them as you said is a nightmare.

tripe...
timing chains dont not need changing unless they are stretched or if they snap..
as for mpg expect anything from 9-20 around town and a max of 32 on the motorway
