cut out and rapid sparking at key position 2!!weird!

Hi all,new member here so please be gentle.

I've got a weird problem with my mk3 avantgarde 2.0 and it's annoying the crap outta me!The car was driving fine when one day last week it decided not to start.When i turn the key to position 2 (all lights on dash) it sparks like mad,but in key position 3(to crank the engine) it cranks but doesn't spark!!!wtf!!

Now i love the rat very much even tho its a bit scruffy and my 13yr old son wants to completely rat it.But if i kick it again i'm gonna break my toe!!

Has anyone got any ideas or had the same fault? cheers guys

You sure fella?even tho it cranks over fine in pos.3?it doesnt feel worn or loose at all!
