Service manual for convertible
« on: 01 November 2011, 10:55 »
Hi all,

Just picked up my 88 GTI convertible  Need a service manual, can seem to find a Haynes and the Bentley is daylight robbery at around £90!!

Will pick up a Haynes for the mechanics / running gear (I assume the MK1 GTI manual will cover that) but is there anything else out there that covers the convertible body, interior, hood in particular (as I want to take mine off and restore the frame as there some minor rusting).

Thanks all

Jason

A little confused.... 98 Convertible, isn't that a mk3?

For a mk1 there are some useful guides/links on here that may help with your roof.

Not sure about dedicated cabrio books, sorry.

Jason,
I have replied on the MK1 OC to you with a link for a pdf of the Bentley manual on download.
The bentley nor haynes does not cover hood removal installation etc. I have given you a full description of a complete frame strip down, removing top cover, interliner and top pad and headliner.

Just in case you not looked here it is....

To get the frame stripped you would need to take the hood off the interliner, top pad and headliner also to get to all the frame.

Problem is you may damage some components whilst removing them as they are glued, stapled, riveted etc.

However if it's a keeper you may find the interliner and pad are worn out ripped and worn thin, also the headliner dirty beyond cleaning or ripped so whilst the frame is stripped it may be the best opportunity to replace what needs doing.
A good point to consider is that you cannot fit the interliner and pad or headliner after you have put the hood on as all the fixings are underneath.

To remove the hood
Remove the rear seat and the side plastic trims too, pull the locking tabs off that protrude through them (on Maual Frame), this gives acsess to the nuts that are on the end of the rear tensioning cable. Put a cloth on your feet and press the rear window out, having a mate to grab it is ideal, this will show a row of staples all the way around the window frame insert, remove these. Using a ratchet spanner 8mm-10 mm locate the 2 nuts on the rear cable and undo them. Now open the top and unscrew the retaining bar that holds the hood in place across the very front. 2 corner plates also. Pull the rubber seals that contact the window tops, (there are 6), from the centre and slide inwards, they are located onto clips either end and just yanking them out will snap them.

Under the seals are screws that hold the retainers in place, undo these and remove. Loosen the front pocket of the hood that goes over the front gentle puling as it is glued and the 2 side flaps adjacent, go to the last 2 frame arm sections and peel those flaps away too. You should be able to lift the hood off the front part of the frame, with half way open, you can now unhook the 2 side tensioning cables from the springs located behind the last 2 frame arms on later models, earlier ones have them located at the front.
There may also be 2 straps located about halfway along the top, that pass through the padding etc, these are held in place with rivets and washers, so drill out, you should be able to pull the rear cable and hood material out of the channel across the back and lift the hood off.

You will now be faced with the inter liner and top pad.
You will notice it is stapled across the rear rail, so remove the staples and the strap that is riveted to the side hinge, with rivet and washers, going to the front the inter liner or what's left of it will be glued down across the front Header, this has 2 flaps so peel them away from the front. (they may be 2 other small straps that are riveted into the side part fo the frame, drill these out). Opening both flaps and allowing them to dangle either side will reveal the top Pad. This is glued along the edges and across rails in the centre, also a sponge strip is glued across the front margin, peel this away, this should reveal a row of spikes that pierce through the front pocket of the interliner, bend these back up using a wide screwdriver. There is a rod that is inserted through the pocket and the ends are located into 2 holes either side, just lift these out, you will need to withdraw the rod as the front bit is held on by a rubber tensioning band that is located in the middle cut out. You should be able to lift off the interliner and pad complete.

The Headliner is riveted with cup washers at the front side points. Drill these out.
It is glued along the 2 centre rails, so peel away, hung in the corners by straps and bands, stapled also across the rear frame, same place as the interliner was, it is guled and wrapped around the 2 webbing straps that go to the rear body corners and glued across the corners of the cable channel and pulled through the sides at the parcel shelf and lond located onto spikes underneath to hold it in place.
You will also need to push the webbing straps that hold the top of the window frame inwards (towards you) and push out the 2 plastic pins that hold that in place. There are 2 plastic covers that the webbing passes through so unscrew nad remove these also.

That should allow removal of the Headliner.

That should just about cover it.

Just been through my archive.

Link for the manual for the mechanics etc.
