HELP - clueless new Golf owner!
« on: 23 October 2011, 13:02 »

Hi all...

Last week I was given a 2001 Golf Cabriolet AUTO, because the owner ran out of space and interest...

It's got 6 months tax and test and I am a bit of a car idiot do I couldn't refuse.

Anyway...

I have it as a little project but I need MASSES of help from people who know stuff.

Issues!

1> It needs two new doors, both are dented. It's Silver.

What's the best place to track doors down?

How much should I pay?

How easy is the refit?

2> It's AUTO box is being weird. When I am driving along it upshifts too quickly, leaving me lagging and waiting for revs. If I drop it into "3" or "2" it is brisker, but in "D" it isn't getting it right.

I heard it might need a "reset" so tried the three second thing with the accelerator... nothing changed.

I hear stories of a resistor?

Any other ideas?

HELP!

(Hello by the way)

:)

how bad are the doors dinted? can it just be pulled out?

scrap yards are probly your best bet to find a door, however dont really see many of the cabriolets kicking around in scrappys, or atleast i havent :D

price wise im not sure never had to buy a door.

had it scanned? try getting a code reader on it see if any faults come up to show why its shifting too quickly.

mk3.5(1998 onwards) cabriolet doors are the same as the mk3 (94 to 98) cabriolet doors however paint code might not be so best to find the paint code on a white sticker in the spare wheel well. cabriolet doors tend to be mostly with breakers and will come bare ie have to refit all the electrics window reg mirror etc if dents arnt really really bad be best to get them pushed out and filled and resprayed.
Gearbox sounds to me to be on of the two sensors if its the 1.6 cost about £70 for new ones from vag good thing is although two fitted they are both identical so get one try one position if doesnt cure it try the other position. take care removing the old ones as they go brittle and break so might need two afterall.

Reference the gearbox, might be worth changing the oil first.

Thanks chaps.

The drivers door dent isn't that bad at all, but the door is dropping slightly... and the passenger size dent is the size of a football so a complete pain.

Two questions.

How difficult is an autobox change - I have found a working one at a scrappy.

And how difficult / complex is fitting two new doors that come with windows and electrics? I take it I would need to reprogramme the key or swap out the locks?
