if i swapped the cluster with one from a scrapyard car would it solve the problem?

Should be so long as they are clocks from the same car as yours (GTI 8V or whatever it is) and they work in the first place. Obviously you will have the milage that was on the scrappy car though. Have a look on egay as there may be some with similar milage to what yours is currently on. Dont be tempted to get ones with much less milage without declaring it when you come to sell it though, and may be worth informing your insurance company. Not entirely sure if the insurance company would give a toss, but it kinda covers you, as VOSA will have all milage for your car recorded at MOTs, and if it gets recorded as less than the last time round, you could find yourself on the end of some unwanted questions.............

i thought the ecu tells clocks what mileage the car has done?

No mate, thats why yours has reset itself. Milage is stored on the clocks I'm afraid.

i spoke to mot place and asked if it would be problem not displaying correct mileage,they said they would just write down what mileage is displayed

You can get your clocks programmed to read the correct milage from a proper place for around £40-£50. If you can sort your own clocks to stop resetting every time you switch off its pobably best. Otherwise you could buy a set on ebay and get them done, or buy a set with roughly the same milage as yours had, and just stick them straight in job done.
