Rumble from front (?) wheel (Not wheel bearing!)
« on: 25 April 2005, 13:40 »
Hello all! HELP needed!

Me got a nasty rumble from front passenger side wheel bearing - only trouble is I changed the cursed thing last weekend after discovering play in that wheel. I assumed that was the source of the noise but after hours of blood and sweat changing the damn thing I was irritated to find the noise still there!

My thought was that the noise could be from the strut top mount, which is knackered on that side - but a quick scan on the forum suggests this is normally a clicking noise not a rumble.

Any ideas before I pull all my hair out??

did you change the right mount? wheel bearings tend to transfer the sound across the car. i once had to change mine and after the AA, a local exhaust place and someone else all telling me it was the drivers side, it ended up being the passenger side. if you jack the car up and hold the spring while spinning the wheel you can feel the vibrations if the bearing is knackered. worth checking it out as it does sound like a bearing.
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post

cheers gtijoe

Good point I'll check the driver side front bearing too! The strut top mount is knackered on the same side as the noise seems to be coming from (passenger). Mind you the other side top mount ain't looking too great either. I'll try the tip about holding the spring though, so if the wheel bearings knackered, but not so obviously as to maken a graunch when jacked up, I should feel vibes through the spring??

Cheers Claude
