f**king car
« on: 11 September 2003, 16:10 »
Sold my car to my cousin yesterday... and this morning she goes to do the school run, and it starts to overheat (light stayed on the whole time flickering) so told her to top up the water cos it could be low.

Problem is it did the same when i got it, we thought it was headgasket but it turned out to be thermostat.

Since then (4 weeks) its been run all over, and havn't had a problem, until today of course, even spent some money on it to get it sorted.

I took out the thermostat, i drove it for ages and seemed all ok.  Then on the way home i get a call saying its done it again.

What to do, its driving me nuts.  could it be the waterpump or worse the headgasket.

HELP PLEASE

Does the cooling fan come on? Are you losing water? Is there is any custard in the oil filler cap? more info please  ;D

If the red light is flashing regularly (rather than flickering intermittently) it could be telling you that the lid on the water resevoir (not the radiator cap) is not fully tightened up and the system is not pressurising properly - try making sure the lid is fully tightened. Kind regards, yt.

Yes fan comes on, not losing any water, and no cream on the cap

I'm thinking heater matrix or waterpump :o

Don't think it will be the matrix as you would be losing water. The water pump fins could be knackered , worth checking. Other things to try are, check the radiator isn't blocked , and try changing the pressure cap on the expansion tank.

I would remove the radiator from the car and reverse flush it using a hose, while its out replace the thermoswitch and put a new thermostat in it, check all the pipes as if old could be perished letting pressure out of the system.

I did have a problem with a radiator hose going soft and leaking.

Mine had a similar problem not long ago and it turned out to be the cap as a few other people have been saying. It was going to half a gauge then the light would flicker off and on for a few seconds. I thought I had fixed it by tightening the connector on the sensor but it was back a few days later. now it hasn't fooled about in a week. take care
