1990 VW Golf Cabrio Clipper - Carburettor

Have an intermittent fault on rev counter - it works perfectly sometimes then will not work at all. Thinking about changing the complete unit.....! I've  checked the wiring as far as I know how.

Is the Speedo/rev counter unit (fuel and temp gauge) the same on a carburettor model to that on a fuel injected model.

Any advice gratefully received.

I'm pretty certain all series 2 mk1 clocks are interchangeable but bare in mind that if you replace with a set of clocks that have features that yours do not, they may not work.

Also, before you rush out and buy another set, check the back of yours.  Check for breaks in the blue circuitboard or dodgy solder on resister connections.  You may be able to fix it.

im not sure but doesnt the rev counter take a feed off the coil or dizzy, im sure when i removed a plug from the coil on mine the rev counter stopped

I think your right, might be worth checking the wiring.

Yes it does, if it were in an injection engine you'd know if that feed was at fault as it also feeds the fuel pump relay... hmmm worth checking the connections on the coil then.  May also be worth tracing them back to see if there are any breaks or splits anywhere further along.
