Mk2 8V Mileage clock problems!
« on: 23 September 2011, 01:58 »
hi. I'm having problems with my speedo clock (mileage meter). the speedo works (it tells me what speed I'm doing no problem), The rev counter works no problem. but the mileage clock does not tick over, neither does the trip meter. its really annoying. i know this is helping towards keeping the car low mileage but id rather have it working and have a true reading of it.

other problem is that the handbrake light doesn't want to go off! ic checked the little switch in the handbrake lever cover and it seems fine (no sticking). the light flickers when i accelerate (an incentive to go faster?).

The mileage is worked from the cable... You will have to take the cluster out and take the speedo out from it - only 5 or 6 screws - then check that the gears are meshed for the dials to work, they are on the left when looking at the dial...

If they have popped out you need to take the 2 screws out of the dial face, then you can get access to the mounting screws behind it by "Gently" moving it about - DON'T try and take the speedo needle off you will brake it!

You should be able to pop the gears back into mesh and it "should" work when reassembled...

I bet the light is just a shorting connection... trace and check the wires...

Does the speedo stop working at the same time?

If yes then I guess you may need a cable..

This might help a little...http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=143227.0

nope. speedo works 100% all the time, same as rev counter.

Rev counter is electrically worked so that's not related...

I would take 'em out & strip them and have a look anyway...  I would also check the cable...

I have a few sets of just speedo units... If it is knacked...

I had one where the pin for the mileage fell out and didnt turn the numbers.
Put it back in and was fine.
There is a way to get needle off i did it years ago, something like moving the needle past its stop then pulling it off.
