I'm in the car club at sultan very handy using a ramp and air tools rather than on ur back scraping ur fingers lol. And I always use my ID when buying parts normally get 10% off some times more!!!

Happy with that, will pop down early next week. I always use my ID card too. 10% off at GSF & ECP, and 10 or 20% at the dealers depending on who is on the parts desk.

The steel is typically anywhere from 0.8mm to 1.5mm on cars. As for getting spare steel, try a scrapyard and see if they have any random panels lying around, you might even find one that includes similar shapes to the ones you want to repair. One thing that hasnt been mentioned is prep work, its sooooooooooo much easier to weld thin stuff if the metal is spotless so its well worth cutting out more than you really need to to make the weld quality better and reduce the likelihood of blowthrough.

id recomend buying a 2nd hand mig.

a lot of the new small migs are utter sh!te, aluminium wound transformers    horrible wire feeds, crap torches and some of the gasless ones are even live torch and AC output

look for something like 165 or 185 A sealy supermig that'll do you well
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

last car i was welded up i started off  useing a mates  clarke en90 with gasless because it was there and on. after about 10 mins i was thinking this would proably be easyer with a big mig . it was and with the 1mm wire

i stick welded a wing vent in once just to prove a point that you chould stick weld car pannels if you really really wanted to. ended up haveing to use the tig inverter to do it so really should have tiged it but thats easy and woun't have prove the point.

for learnign to weld imo  GAS learn to weld with that then the rest comes easy
