Basic advice needed on what to buy.
« on: 18 April 2005, 23:44 »
I'm starting from scratch on a system which I intend to build up. At the moment I have an old Sony cassette HU and some crappy speakers in the standard door pods. I have absolutely no bass, just distortion and the mid range sounds strained. As I said, I need to start from scratch.

I'm looking for advice on which brand of HU? I'd like something with 4V pre-outs to build on later. Also I want MP3 compatability. There are just sooooo many units to choose from - how do you know how these things compare against eachother? I've searched the web for ages looking for some kind of site which scores them against eachother but can't find anything really usefull.

Following the head unit I want to change the factory door pods (Mk2 Golf) for aftermarket ones which can house a 17cm driver and run a tweeter in the dash mounted location. The standard door pods are in my opinion utter kak. Any opinions on running 2 or 3 components up front?? I'm thinking the options are:

1. 17cm door, ??cm in the dash, and tweeter on a pillar
or
2. 17cm in door and tweeter in dash with no mid sized component up front?

Anyone have advice on front components, HUs, good review sites, recommended brands etc

cheers

I look at a list of decent units I can afford. and then whichever looks the best I get that
audioscape make pods to take 17cm in the front.
