It's really simple...if you are in the position to spend £30k on a car, you but what you want.
There's no right or wrong...you buy what suits you.
You will always get an 'expert' telling you that you could have bought an RS4/RS6/911 etc for the same money - and yes you could. But try running it.

I sold my 911 and went back to a Mk6 GTI because it suited me.
Would I do it again? Yes.
Is there anthing I'd rather spend my £30k on? No.

As for buying an old Golf GTI and modding the hell out of it - been there and done that.
And my well sorted Mk3 (which has probably cost me the same as a new Mk6 over the last 10 years) is a fine car...but it's noisier, less comfortable, slower, handles worse, less safe and less practical than my Mk6 which would show it a clean pair of tailights on any given road.

You buy what you want.
Simples.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

the mk5 was the perfect choice for many reasons. Comfort, safety, engine, DSG gear box, practicality, and the red stripe on the front. Yes I did buy it new.

I looked at the Megane R26 (because I liked the styling of the Megane of the time) but came back to the Mk5 because it was more of an all rounder.

Would I buy a Mk1 or Mk2 GTI? If it were mint and absolutely standard then yes. I am not mechanically minded and have no inclination to mod new cars or restore/maintain classic cars.

A car to me is something that gets me from A to B with minimal fuss and is versatile when the need arises. I've just loaded up the cars with 3 Malm chest drawers from Ikea and brought them home. That is why I love the GTI.

i know i own a mk4 and probably dont have a worthy opinion to this thread, lol, but i used to hate golfs, couldnt stand them, except 1, a front cover issue of a very old fast car mag, it was green with bbs alloys, slammed, with clean trims, chrome engine bay, there was no style, theme or characteristics to it, it was simply, the tidyest mk1 you will ever see

if i could own it, i would, but as someone has just mentioned, practicality, a modern car is so much better when youve got kids and have to go to asda every saturday

i love golfs, and i love my mk4, i love driving it, my next car, hopefully a mk5
