Engine Hesitating! Mk3 Gti 8v ADY engine, please help

I've been having trouble with my car since i bought it over a year ago, it did not bother me too much but now it's getting worse

It feels like its hesitating / stuttering / holding back. Basically when accelerating it gets to around 3000rpm and feels like its misfiring or holding back, if you keep the pedal planted it sort of pushes past it.

It does do it at full throttle sometimes and it's normally around the middle of the rev range

Have replaced:

Plugs
Leads
Air Filter
Oil Filter
Fuel filter
Dizzy
Rota arm

Have checked a few of the breather pipes and found no blockages, there was a tiny film of oil in the intake just before the throttle body but nothing major, expected that after 207500 miles! lol

The other day the car just would not idle, started then cut off, tried to start again and it did the same thing, if i held the throttle down and started it reved once then cut off
Lifted up the bonnet squeezed a few breather pipes, then my mate turned up, half hour later i went to show him what it was doin and it started fine!
Thats the first time it's done the not starting thing, the holding back has been goin on for about a year and a half

vaccum leaks? dodgy MAF?

make sure intake pipe properly secured onto the TB, just double check all pipes. dont forget the little flexi hose on the TB neither

Disconnect your MAF and go for a spin. It may cut out before long but if this is at fault, you will have no problems at 3k rpm. If it cures it, remove maf (very carefully) and clean the element with electrical contact cleaner and a cotton bud (again very carefully.) Failing that when its plugged back in, a new one is in order, and that will cost in excess of £100 including the trade in of your old unit. Have a search as this is asked loads mate.

the problems you are having are almost exactly the same as mine and i changed the lambda sensor and instantly it was like driving a different car. try and run vagcom for a possible fault code.

Unplug the maf and then see what it drives like.

Thanks guys! Disconnected the MAF and solved the problem! Runs like a dream, will try to clean it but me mates got one in his shed he said i can have so should be all good
