Golf TDI 150 Problem.
« on: 21 March 2012, 20:13 »
Hi guys, I would appreciate your help, I will give you a diagnosis of what problems I am having and see where we can go from there:

- Cold Starting i.e In the morning or after a 8 hour shift from work, basically when its been stood a while, car takes a while to turn over to ignite ( Plenty of blue smoke )
- When I first drive off after the above ^^^^ if I put my foot too far down It will drop to 3 cylinders and it wont move for like 10 seconds
- After this^^ the car will pull fine, but will still hesitate in 1st and 2nd gear IF I put my foot right to the floor, but IF i feed it gentally its fine.
- I have no problems in 3rd/4th/5th/6th pulls fine
- When sitting in traffic or standing still somewhere there is a strong smell of diesel exhaust if I put the window down (dont know if its related to the above)

Ok so I can put up with my car being abit hesitant if it means I dont put my foot flat down in 1st or 2nd gear, I can live with that, but when It kickes onto 3 cylinders in the morning and leaves plumes of smoke it kinda gets annoying..

So I have changed the glow plugs and given a full service.

Now I am starting to think the lumpyness on 3 cylinders when stood still only could be something to do with air getting in, and when hot in 1st and 2nd maybe some air is being pulled through the pipe when under full load?????

Or it could be injector loom?
Injectors?
Some may say the cam needs doing? but wouldnt it be like that in all gears and all the time?
I have bought a new coolant temp sensor which I need to fit.

But I would really like your opinions are expertise.

Many Thanks James

The blue smoke means that is it burning too much oil and the copious amounts of black smoke maybe a boost leak in some of the intercooler piping .Not much else I can comment on I'm afraid!  :undecided:

You may an oil leak, and it is getting into your intercooler pipes, as in quite a bit of it then when you start it up it smokes like biatch because it has been allowed to collect over night. How badly is it smoking, mine smokes on start up, I think all diesels do!

Mine smokes the same as yours, only from a cold engine start but with no lumpiness. When searching for related problems it pointed to  a faulty injector

Have you ever checked the cams? Might be worth just checking them.
I often wonder why people never expect sarcastic comments from me - they're the only reason I speak...

will be checking before I make my next move, wouldn't the cam make the problem throughout the gears?

Update: decided to have an experiment this morning, started my car and left it ticking over for 15 mins on all cylinders, usually if I revved it, it would drop to 3, after 15 mins or so I went to work and the car was fine.

So its usually if its been sat for 5+ hours thats when the problem occurs unless i leave it running and it to warm up.

Any guesses?
