cammed mk3 16v gti performance

i wanted to know if a mk3 16v gti is cammed with straight through exhaust and cutout airbox (drilled & smooth) what will the performance be on it?

Thats too vague a question. Plus the ECU map would need optimising to suit. Also problem with idle emissions if too aggressive cam is chosen.

just a cam isnt worth doing. Best to get head work done and then cam and remap. 170/175bhp

You might get 10 BHP at best...on a standard (re-mapped) ECU. 15 BHP maybe on wilder cams - if you can get them to run.
But without a decent head, you are wasting money...and since you need the engine to rev higher to make the best of the cams, a standard gearbox will cripple any gains you get.

You can get up to 200 BHP from an ABF on cams and standard manifolds, along with a very good head, modified TB/airbox etc...but it won't be as quick as you'd have thought adding 50 BHP should be...you'll get just as good a gain (real world) from sorting out the gearing.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

Depends what you want to do...

Rebuild the standard 'box with a 3.94 FD from a Passat for £200-250 for the rebuild, plus the cost of an eBay/Scrappers Passat box, if you are happy to strip the Passat 'box, get the FD out and drill the diff rivets off...so maybe £350-400 all in.

Or go for a close ratio, 6 speed Gemini/Quaife gear kit, with a new VW 4.2/3.94 FD, uprated bushes, phospher bronze shift bearings, uprated pins etc, add the additional 6th speed oil feed from an 02A, add a decent LSD, the uprated diff bolts etc..and you could be looking at £6000, if you are building it into a new casing.

So if fitting the FD from the passat,how would this affect the accelaration and the top speed,how much difference would it make in the real world ,cheers

A lower final drive increases torque multiplication. Meaning you will transmit more torque to the ground. Which increases acceleration,  although more wheelspin would decrease it. You will loose cruising economy and top speed unless you swap to a lower 5th.
