O/S Inner CV Boot

Hi Guys,

I am hoping to tackle said boot in the next few days but a bit worried as the boot I have been sent does not have a metal base like this sort for example:



This is my inner joint:



But instead looks more like a universal type similar to the outer CV, despite being sold specifically for my car (Golf Gti 1996). Could the company have got it wrong or is there a way to fit universal ones to these joints?

The metal bit is the joint itself. The boot just fits over the end of it and is banded on. Check your photo and you can see the banding just behind the metal bit.

the pic you show is the correct part for the inner cv joint on the drivers side,it is part metal and part rubber.It is the only one on the car like it.I have never seen a universal one that's all rubber for that particular joint.Mine came from Eurocarparts and was about £18.

I changed mine a short while back and the best advice i can give you is to remove the whole driveshaft from the car and do it on a bench.The tapered washer and circlip are a pig to fit in situ,as i found out the hard way.

Well either way the shaft has to come off so that's first step. Can I ask how you managed to remove the outer joint? I tried on the NS and it wouldn't budge.

Failing that is it possible to remove the shaft and inner joint by disengaging the shaft from the outer cv and leaving it in the hub, then when refitting replace the outer boot in situ?

I removed the whole shaft with both inner and outer cv joints attached to it,removed the inner one on bench,fitted new boot,degreased and regreased both cv joints and refitted.

Was you drivers side inner boot replacement one with metal like my first pic or a universal one that slips over and is clamped?

is yours an 8v? not sure if the  older engine types were different but my AGG is the same as above had the correct part from gsf now and was only £17 so get onto them, part number if you need it is 450vg0340.

Yea its a P reg Gti Anniversary Edition AGG. Not sure whether to fit the boot supplied or buy another with metal bit now.

buy the proper metal bit one, as said its 20 quid and the proper part
