@p3asa makes a very good point.
But how does one avoid this if one changes tyres? It's of concern.
Probably best to stick with painted alloys rather than diamond cut ones like Monza Shadows and their ilk.

If you set the tyre machine up correctly its not a problem

Its not known as whiteworn to VW from memory but is a known issue and has been for decades.
More common since 2005 when they fitted them to the mk5 golf.
But many before that suffered including anni versions of previous GTIs.
Its also known to other brands in the VW group as Audis from the 80s/90s suffered it.
SEAT GTI's with the 12 spoke Ronals suffered it.
etc
etc.

You would think that with VW knowing about the problem they would do something about it.  Then again for every wheel that is exchanged it is probably the supplying wheel manufacturer that takes most of the hit?!

They carn't do anything about it. Its due to the polished lacquered finish of the wheel, its an issue with all alloy wheels with this finish.
You would think though they would learn but it seems more and more of the VW range has this type of finish wheel now.

well just to give you guys something to think about..

when the weather dried off i cleaned the car.. turned out the wheel they gave me wasnt even painted properly looking like when they sprayed the black inbetween the spokes, they never even did the back and so directly behind the spokes was unpainted gray.. even in the wheel bolt holes they were half painted..

took me 3 weeks of battling ... with their comments of "thats how it came from the factory."

i had to explain to them that quality control wasn't their strong point, a half painted wheel should have been picked up on, it should never have been put on by the mechanic/tyre fitter

and if it was a body panel if it came half painted would they say its acceptable? eventually after knocking some common sense into them they agreed to replace. the wheel now is perfect and when it come they said they could see the difference.. yeah no crap sherlock.

i also pointed out saying "i bet when people buy cars here and then come back with small issues with the car you never see them again at this dealership to buy another other than those that don't care about cars other than transport from a to b..." the guy had no comment... i said to him i tried buying a car from you guys and with cash in the bank to buy outright you couldnt even sell me a gti i was buying anyways...

he said he will speak to the manager and get him to ring me to speak to me about the service ive been given from sales to service...

guess what.... no call.. lol

so just make sure you check the work a dealer does on your car... it can vary

I have noted the same on the Charleston wheels on my new GTD.  i.e. on the inside of the wheel where it meets the wheel hub they have not been sprayed completely black and are more undercoat grey.  I thought this the way they come.

Interested to know if other Charlestons wheels are the same?

Is this an issue I should raise with the dealer?

I had a set of OEM black Detroits on my car back along and they too weren't fully painted (just like the body shells on many members cars). The fronts of the Detroits would scratch if you so much as breathed near them and the backs were just undercoat grey. Pretty poor considering each wheel had a retail of over £300.

The new wheel and centre caps are on.  It just goes to show that VW dealers are inconsistant, one person get's new wheels within a week of asking and others have to beg for what should be a simple warranty repair.

2 coats of Rimwax and it looks superb....
