02 sensor needed for a de-cat?

When I bought my VR the previous owner had put a s/s exhaust on with a de-cat pipe. He gave me the original exhaust and Cat as well. Looking at the original exhaust it has an 02 sensor in it with wires......So I am presuming mine has no 02 sensor.....Is this ok to run a car without an 02 sensor, if not what are the side effects of not having one? I must say she does stink of petrol when first started! Revs are stable, pulls well with no hesitation and can still reach her top speed so wondering now what the 02 does??
Thanks in advance

think it would have a 02 sensor fitted or the car wouldnt be running right, normal for a car to stink of petty when 1st started.

It should have one fitted and sounds like it does, get the car on a ramp and see it has, if not you will need to get a boss welded on and the sensor fitted asap.
