Can i make my 1.8 driver a GTI??
« on: 18 April 2005, 20:44 »
Ive got a spare top end for a golf gti (mk 2) 8v and i am wondering if it fits straight on to a 1.8 driver.
I know that injection system, ecu, exhaust, throttle body has to be fitted!
Is the head and the cam the same?????

 Can this be done?

afaik the bottom end is the same and would fit on, but it's not that simple and you'd have to change the fueling system and a whole load of other things.

would be easier to have a donor car to rob bits as and when you need them. probably easier to just buy a gti....................

You could fit the cam from the GTI head in to your existing head, and then fit the 8v GTI exhaust including the manifold.

You would need to get your carb re jetted, replaced with a webber one or at least set up again for better fuelling.

A fuel regulator may help, but for details of this work you will ideally need to search the forum or speak to someone who has done it before.

As the old saying goes, never build a car that you can buy.  :undecided:

^ wot he says

cant see the point of converting a driver. far too much hassle, the gains are really negligable, and you can buy 8v GTI for f-all.

to be honest, angry late drivers were always a hassle if they raced my valver as they were not as slow as they should of been. I always had to pull out 80% of my power to destroy them. for some reason they always gave me more problems than normal 8v GTIs.

just replace the cam & exhaust manifold with 8v GTI items and you'll have yourself a GT which will happily sit with 8v GTI's

If you're going to stick the head on make sure you go with injection as it wont work very well with a carb because the inlet manifold coolant channel is missing, which will give you icing problems in the inlet.  Plus if you stick with the 2e2 carb the autochoke and waxstat need the coolant flow from the inlet to function properly so it will never come off choke.

If you really want to run a carb with the GTI head you'll need to stick a webber on it, and then deal with the problem of how to heat the inlet.  Some wrap an electric heater round the inlet which apparently does the job nicely.

Just sell the driver and buy an 8v gti, or go the whole hog and buy a 16v or a G60!  It'll cost you less than a conversion will.  Carb and injection golfs don't really have that much in common, besides the shape and the back seats!

Luckily I parked my driver into a stationary vw polo, so I was forced to buy another car, so I bought an 8v gti on a J plate.

I have a slight problem though - underground and multi-storey car parks - I keep setting alarms off with my exhaust!!!
