small brake prob!!

Hello All
Got a small nigley problem every morning when I pull the 91 8v out of the garage. I start the car up, select reverse gear and the clutch up. The problem is that the initial moment of reverse there is a thud sound feels like something is sticking, then once this has happened nothin till next time I start up in the morning.
Thud sound seems like it is coming from the passenger side rear wheel
Could it be the rear caliper seizing or dodgy brake cable.
How can I check that the caliper is seized.
cheers
Manesh

The handbrake mechanism in your caliper is seizing up, very common on mk2 golfs, you can put mk3 ones on the late mk2s. Secure the front wheels, jack the rear of the car up , take the handbrake off and spin the wheel , see if it binds at all.

mk4 calipers are better - they're ally!!!
you need to modify the brake lines though.

When the handbrake mechanism on the calliper seized on mine you could tell by the handrake, there was no resistance when you started to pull the handbrake leaver up.
You could stick with the mk2 callipers, free them up with plenty of copper grease and put some ford scorpio return springs on. Havnt had any probs with mine since.

'binds' means rubs ie. not free moving. You only need to replace the one thats knackered, calipers don't need replacing in pairs like brake linings. VW are expensive, don't know about Euro car parts, don't go to GSF they are sh!t!

You can put mk3 calipers on late mk2 with no mods. All the handbrake mechanism is internal unlike the mk2 ones so they don't seize up!

yeah as VR6 says the later '90 on cars have the brake pipe on the top of the swinging arm so you can fit MK3 and 4 calipers with out any hassle.
