Anyone know anything about the air conditioning compressor failure and why that would stop the 2 engine fans in a MK5 05 plate Gti?

I get why the fans not spinning would affect the compressor and air con but not vice versa? Surely the main engine fan is powered and monitored as a standalone process from the compressor?

I have been told the compressor has failed and the fans therefore will not spin under any circumstance which if the engine is overheating it will just continue to overheat. I find that a flaw in the engineering process leaving the car vulnerable to detonation if the air con unit fails

Am I missing something? The cost is £1500!!!!

The main cooling fan should / must be on a different circuit

My thoughts too fella, gonna be talking to the dealers techie tomorrow morn and get him to explain the logic but apparently they had to phone Volkswagen technical about it all :undecided:

Not having much luck with VWs at the moment...I feel the itch of old skool calling again

On mine, albeit a lowly Mk3 as soon as the AC is engaged the fans start up, so its part of the fan primary circuit.

Yeah Len it turns out it is part of the secondary fan circuit, just they understood the two fans were not replacable separately. They are saying that the compressor has gone - what a funking surprise there

I had issues back in 09 with it and asked if it was supposed to be sooooo bloody noisy and they said yes, so I left it at that point.  18 Months on and the secondary fan is completely dead and they are saying that due to this the condensor and compressor were not adequately cooled causing the compressor to knacker...it is also sending an intermittent signal to the compressor even when on Econ mode, but should be running 2% permanently to de-humidify apparently.  So the price is on compressor and one secondary fan plus labour £1500 BUT they also have told me they are hearing an intermittent noise on the main engine fan as well, and as the labour is the same to do both it will be just the parts so £1800!!!

The manufacturer is stating they will offer nothing against their failed parts, so its over to VW Customer Service, which to the credit of the dealer they are putting a case together.  The only good news is that the main fan hasnt failed yet so I can still use the car

So I will be adding an Air Con failure petition on this site  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=197968.0 and the MKVGTI forum, as I have read loads about them failing.
Its a known issue and the first thing to check for if air con is not working, but they have not had enough complaints to make it a "repair for free/recall" type issue.

Horrible news and an expensive bill non the less.

There MUST be loads of decent indy places out there in Manchester? Why are you dealing with VW? They charge you more for what is imo a lesser service. My local VAG indy is brilliant and considerably cheaper.

I can safety say my car will never see a VW garage again.

Yeah Alan there is but it's the point with the issue raising it's head prior to the failure that's making me deal with them. Depends on the goodwill that they have shown with others over on the mkvgti forum. Gonna get back to me by Tuesday

I bet a compressor through them is mega bucks! If they don't offer you nothing, surely your best of going independent.

Fans come on to get rid of the heat, so if it doesn't get rid of heat through the condenser the pressure increases untill the compressor goes, which happened to you obviously.

Well, no further as yet, but the saga continues...

All will hopefully clear in the near future...dealership is trying to be helpful...VW UK are trying to wriggle...and I'm squeezed in the middle praying

VW are basically looking to see if they can up their contributions due to brand loyalty from me and family...and the dealership is looking at how they can contribute or offer alternative solutions. We'll see what turns up from either or both of them and in the meantime fingers crossed and bollox tied in knots as well
