Radiator cooling fan
« on: 06 April 2005, 22:17 »
Hi All,

Have had a bit of overheating of late and discovered that the fan motor was creaking and groaning so have replaced it.  Need to know, though: when should it kick in, and how long should it be on for?  Should it stay on briefly when the engine is switched off?  Is my switch on the way out as well?!

Cheers!

not sure when its supposed to kick in, but if you pop the bonnit and let it run while stationary, watch it till it kicks in and shuts off. it'll be squeeking because the bearings have gone dry, it won't do too much harm for the time being but i'd get another one sooner rather than later. this can also happen if the cowling has been damaged and the blades of the fan can rub and get put under more stress.....
team grumpy....... its a way of life, not a forum post

Thanks for that.  Have replaced it with another from a scrappy today, and all seems to be better.  Will keep an eye out on next long journey....  Will also try and strip down the old one and grease all the bearings- never know when I may need it!
