Stupid really. Have a 1997 GTi now and my 96 is deffo a more solid shell and host no rust at all.

Proper weird actually makes me wonder if my 1.6 shell was made and left for a while. Has all the protection my '92 had the 97' doesn't.

I'd guess that the difference between shells produced in 96 & 97 is minimal, the difference in your case is that the 1.6 won't have had the gti plastic trim acting as a water trap for the last 15 years
