Having worked on a 1.9NA D 6N Polo I can tell you the following:

The engine bay is too small for the 'big block' VW motors.  It will be a c*nt to work on.

You would need to use an 085 gearbox with the 1.8.  085 gearboxes are made of cheese and the might of a PB motor would make it melt and consume its internals.

This idea is doomed to failure (or an awful lot of cutting and welding).
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

performance v's effort required = fail.

people have got big block motors in but they tend to go far hot 16v's or 1.8t's to make it worth the effort.

a 1.6 small block 16v  woould give better performance than an 1.8 8v and it would fit much easyer
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

it has been done before, both with the 8v and 16v 2litre engines, as far as i know theres loads of cutting and welding just to make enough room and then as DH noted theres only room for a baby gearbox, however, the polo saloon was available with a 1.6ohc engine which although its a 1600 is from the same 'big block' family as the 2litres..... but the saloon was a 9n chassis, just like the seat ibizas from the same era which come with the 2litre engine already in.

So, having wondered the same thing when i had more mk2 bits than mk2's to fit them to the answer is yes, its possible but so is almost anything for that much effort, and don't bother, buy an ibiza GTi, esp as that will already have suitable brakes, suspension and a hundred other little bits that otherwise you would have to make.

2.0 16v  running on a 085 gearbox      surely that got to be in a showcar or is it mounted on velcro
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

if you google 'polo 6n 2litre' there are lota of threads that cover it, and a couple of (ropey) youtube clips of an ABF'd one running the old O2O 4speed box, i guess you could chop out the inner wings for a 5speed but seriously, you'd have to REALLY want it to do it!

Just buy a blown up ibiza for peanuts and bolt it in, why do mega fabrication when it's so easily avoidable?
