Golf Clipper body repair
« on: 30 May 2011, 10:46 »
Would be grateful for any help anyone might be willing to give.
I am restoring a 1990 Golf Clipper. It came with a new front panel but only the lower half of what is shown in parts listings from body panel suppliers....  i.e. minus the headlamp surrounds and the slam panel for the bonnet attachment. It fits ok.

It will obviously need welded to what is still there (the existing slam panel and the vertical pieces which would be in front of the radiator.) but.......... does it require welding to the chassis legs and along the very bottom (to the lower panel attached to the front axle beam) and to the inner wings?
It does not look like the original panel has been CUT away as the flanges are all intact and no signs of drilling or cutting out.

Thanks in advance.
M

i'd take your email down from a public forum quicksmart fella or you'll be inundated with spam

try using the forum image posting guidelines to get your pictures up on the site... its fairly straightforward

Thom89.
Some pics attached - hope they have worked. You'll see the 'new' panel and the existing front end of the car. Any help/advice as to what is welded/not welded relating to first message in this thread would be great.

OK memory refreshed  I'm guessing that you didn't remove the old panel, that why you're asking, the evidence points towards the rust that has formed where the fitting edges have been cleaned up, and then left to rust again!
The front X member that runs from one side to the other, is the main bearer of the front panel, and has upper and lower fitting edges, fit your new panel so that the bottom edge is directly and centrally located over the X member, also bolting the wing bottoms to the front panel will reassure you that you have the new panel is in something like the right place... the rest of the new panel simply overlaps the bottoms of the headlamp panels, and the bonnet lock support panel (slam panel)
Once you're happy with the fit, you can mark the new panel where you want to mount it to the X member, then drill 6mm holes across the upper and lower fitting edges, these holes can then be plug welded with a MIG. Overlap joints should be welded with a series of overlapping tack welds.
Where the the new panel fits over the chassis legs, (square holes) iirc there is a gap between the old and new panels, that should be there, except for one tab on each side, look for evidence of prior welding to confirm
Before fitting the new panel, make sure that all edges are clean, and free from rust, also that the edges are straight...
Wings are only bolted to the front panel, and not welded!
Cleaned edges should be treated with a Zinc coat before welding, pretty sure that this is available from the likes of Halfords, or any Motor factor

Thom...

Many thanks for your help.......I just needed a bit of confirmation and reassurance before the mig welding phase. The new panel fits very well and I'll prepare it as you suggest along with the existing edges/flanges. You are correct in that I did not remove the original section... at least it had not been completely butchered!!
