lost 5th gear
« on: 05 June 2011, 23:33 »
driving along the motorway tonight, i wasnt accelerating just had my foot steady at about 65/70 and suddenly i feel a loss of power and the revs start to go up, i immediately get off the throttle and drop it into 4th, everythings ok so i put it back into 5th, at first it started grinding and kicked back out and then it wouldnt engage 5th at all, pulled into the nearest services and checked everything over, all 5gears engaged when the car was turned off, so i tried it again in the car park, first second third and fourth worked but 5th still didnt engage, limped home with 4 gears and now im stuck with a 4 speed :(

just scared to what it could be, what are my options? worn/broken linkage? but how could it do that just cruising? or at the very worst the syncromesh has gone, but again how could it do this just cruising with hardly any load on the box at all?

I don't think linkage will be the issue! 5th seems to suffer as when the oil drops it's not lubricated properly meaning it wears real fast!
If it works in every other gear I would say it's new box time!

Sounds like the box is pooped. Check the oil level in it and go from there. I ran one dry once, lost all gears except 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Put oil in it and it was fine after that.

as above really mate, had this issue in an old rover I had. ran it dry, lost 5th, put oil in it, worked again, although a couple months down the line it did just give up. So it's a case of try one, and if that doesn't work the other.
